This easy recipe is a great option for those who want to home cook for their pups! The chicken and veggies are often supported in anti-inflammatory diets – which are great for dogs with arthritis. As always – please review the ingredients and amounts with your veterinarian to ensure your pups specific needs are met. Many home cooked meals for our pets do not contain enough essential vitamins or minerals. This recipe is one that we have used for our pups for 10+ years – but we also supplement with a high quality commercial kibble to ensure a well rounded nutrition intake.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups 1 3/4 Brown or white Rice

  • 1 1/2 cups 1 1/2 Frozen Green Peas (you can mix in some frozen kale too)

  • 1 ea 1 Sweet Potato

  • 1 cup 1 Baby Carrots

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 Frozen Cranberries and/or blueberries (optional)

  • 2 lbs 2 Chicken tenders or breasts

  • 4 ea 4 Eggs (cooked)

  • 1 1/2 Cup 1 1/2 Oatmeal (instant cooked)

Directions

  • Cook rice and add to a large bowl.
  • Steam or microwave peas (do not over cook). Add cooked peas to food processor.
  • Add carrots, peas and cranberries (if used) to food processor. Mix on high till the carrots and peas are thoroughly chopped. Add mixture to the large bowl with rice.
  • Cook sweet potato in microwave until soft all the way through. Set aside.
  • Add a bit of water to the bottom of a large skillet (adds moisture and reduces burning). Add the chicken and cook on medium heat. Cook thoroughly (approx 15 minutes) or until the chicken reaches 165*. Set aside.
  • Cook eggs in a skillet on medium heat – no milk or salt please! Use the entire egg (no shell) and mix together. Cook until fluffy consistency – no fluid – remains. Add cooked egg to the large bowl with the rice and veggie mix.
  • Cut the sweet potato in half and scoop out the insides and add to the large bowl with the rice and veggies. You can process the skin in the food processor – or slice into small pieces – and add to the mixture as well.
  • Cut the chicken into small chunks – about an inch square – or process in the food processor. Most dogs prefer the chunks – but your choice. Once cut – add to the large mixture with rice and veggies.
  • Mix all of the ingredients together in the large bowl by hand. Be sure to mix thoroughly to ensure ingredients are not clumping together.
  • Once mixed – add the completed mixture to one or two glass bowls, cover tightly and refrigerate.
  • Thats it! The mixture will stay good for about a week – but always check for freshness or bad odor.
  • Check with your vet for proper amounts to feed – but for a middle age dog – around 40lbs – 3/4 cup 2x per day is about right.

Notes

  • Remember – some dog breeds need more or less protein! Confirm what is best for your dog by speaking with your veterinarian.
  • For dogs who need higher levels of protein – or red meat vs. chicken – you can substitute hamburger meat or whatever red meat (beef) you prefer. Try to avoid red meats with a lot of grizzle. Do not use pork!
  • When serving – reheat in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.
  • Adding a tablespoon of cottage cheese on top of one meal per day makes a nice treat and adds calcium!

  1. I’ve been using the recipe for all my pups for years! Sometimes I use hamburger or other beef for my active dogs. Feel so much better knowing they are getting great quality food! It takes 30 minutes per week – so worth it!
